After careful consideration and recommendation by the GWA Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Members of the GWA Chamber of Commerce have voted in favor of 2026 being the final year of operation for the organization. The Chamber has had a long and distinguished history of supporting its members, area businesses and local communities. A great deal of effort and pride has been channeled through the Chamber of Commerce during these years, with many organizations and individuals making significant contributions helping to facilitate the Chamber’s long-term success.

As is the case with many volunteer driven organizations, securing volunteers has become increasingly difficult due to competing economic pressures and a general lack of discretionary time. While membership levels have continued to be supportive of the Chamber’s mission, the combination of planned retirements from the Board of Directors and high levels of member business commitments, there will be no representation for a Board of Directors after the completion of 2026. The lack of organizational leadership and management going forward is a primary consideration for moving to cease operations this year and dissolve the Chamber as a not-for-profit Corporation.

The Chamber of Commerce has long operated as collective type of organization, where in addition to paying annual membership fees, members donate their time, pooling resources to promote and market business in the specific region served by the Chamber, advocate for pro-business policies, sponsor informational member events, and facilitate networking between members and communities. Unfortunately, over recent years, those members able to donate time to support these business and community friendly initiatives has become successively smaller, to the point where there are very few members able to contribute, becoming an unsustainable operating model for the organization.  Note that our local Chamber of Commerce is not the only small, volunteer driven Chamber facing challenges in these demanding times, other small Chambers have suspended or discontinued operations in our region and across the country.

The Chamber path forward is to provide full benefits to all current paid members through 2026, effectively the Chamber will operate as normal this year, promoting and marketing members and the respective communities through the Chamber’s online platforms and events, managing the online area business directory, advocating for business with the local municipalities, providing academic scholarships for deserving graduating seniors from the local high schools and managing the Wheatland Community Hall of Fame, among other services and activities. At the same time the Board of Directors will work through the process of preparing for and completing the dissolution of the organization, in accordance with the organization’s by-laws and New York State not-for-profit regulations. As such, no additional memberships or sponsorships will be accepted for the reminder of 2026. In accordance with New York State law, the Chamber will transfer any remaining assets to a selected New York State, not-for-profit organization.

Thank You!

The GWA Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors would like to thank and recognize ALL current and past members of the organization, organizational leaders, community leaders, partner organizations and individual participants for their outstanding and sustained contributions in support of area business and associated communities over so many years.
